Tigers score 6 in 1st, hold off Twins (AP)

It wasn't pretty or easy but the Detroit Tigers got the win. Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homered in a six-run first inning and Detroit held on for a 10-8 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. The first-place Tigers stretched their lead in the AL Central to 5 1/2 games over third-place Minnesota.

Dodgers place RHP Schmidt on 15-day DL (AP)

The Dodgers placed right-hander Jason Schmidt on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of problems with his surgically repaired shoulder, and recalled infielder Tony Abreu from Triple-A Albuquerque. Schmidt last pitched on Wednesday night against Milwaukee, giving up four runs, five hits and three walks over 3 2-3 innings in a 4-1 loss.

Rangers designate Padilla for assignment (AP)

The Texas Rangers have designated right-hander Vicente Padilla for assignment, likely ending his tenure with the club. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release or outright Padilla to the minors. Padilla, the Rangers' No. 2 starter when the year began, is 8-6 with a 4.92 ERA this season, his fourth with Texas.

Nolasco pitches Marlins by Phillies 3-2 (AP)

Ricky Nolasco pitched seven sharp innings, Nick Johnson and Cody Ross hit solo homers and the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Friday night. Fresh off getting swept by last-place Washington, the Marlins snapped a three-game losing streak in the opener of a crucial series for them against the NL East-leading Phillies.

Carpenter not sharp but wins again (AP)

Ryan Ludwick's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning scored the go-ahead run and the St. Louis Cardinals withstood a shaky beginning by Chris Carpenter to beat Pittsburgh 6-4 on Friday night, stretching the Pirates' losing streak to six games. Cubs scratch Zambrano due to back issue (AP)

Chicago Cubs right-hander Carlos Zambrano was scratched about 15 minutes before his scheduled start Friday night against the Colorado Rockies with a lower back problem. Left-hander Sean Marshall replaced Zambrano. Zambrano, 7-4 with a 3.35 ERA, worked a season-low three innings in his last start against Florida on Aug.

Cubs reinstate C Soto from DL (AP)

Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto, sidelined the past month by a left oblique strain, has been reinstated from the disabled list. The Cubs made the move Friday, and optioned infielder/outfielder Micah Hoffpauir to Triple-A Iowa. Soto, the NL rookie of the year last season, was in the lineup for Friday night's game at Colorado.
