Mets’ Beltran to miss start of season (AP)
Carlos Beltran has had surgery on his troublesome right knee and the New York Mets' center fielder will miss the start of the season. In a statement released Wednesday night, the Mets say Beltran's osteoarthritis worsened during the offseason and he decided to have arthroscopic surgery to clean out the arthritic area of his knee.

MLB committee to study expanded replay (AP)
Expanded instant replay is on the agenda for the first meeting of Major League Baseball's newly formed committee of managers and longtime executives on Thursday. The 14-man committee also will discuss expanding the first round of the playoffs to best of seven and ways to eliminate lengthy breaks during the postseason.

Tigers, RHP Zumaya avoid arbitration (AP)
Oft-injured reliever Joel Zumaya and the Detroit Tigers avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a $915,000, one-year contract on Wednesday. The hard-throwing right-hander was 3-3 with a 4.94 ERA and one save in 29 appearances last year during a season cut short by shoulder problems. He made $735,000.

Giants, Huff complete 1-year, $3M deal (AP)
The San Francisco Giants completed their $3 million, one-year contract with Aubrey Huff on Wednesday. The first baseman passed a physical after the sides agreed to terms during the weekend. General manager Brian Sabean made it known finding a left-handed power hitter was a priority before the start of spring training next month.
