Padres agree to deal with OF Stairs (AP)
Outfielder Matt Stairs and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a minor league deal. Stairs, who turns 42 in February, has spent last year and the final month of the 2008 season with Philadelphia, serving primarily as a pinch-hitter.

Nolan Ryan’s group to buy Rangers (AP)
Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks agreed to sell the Texas Rangers to a group that includes U.S. Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan on Saturday. The sides announced they had finally reached an agreement eight days after a 30-day exclusive negotiating window expired. The group is headed by Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg.

Astros, OF Pence agree to 1 year, $3.5M (AP)
All-Star outfielder Hunter Pence and the Houston Astros have agreed to a $3.5 million, one-year contract, more than seven times his $464,000 salary last season. The 26-year-old was eligible for arbitration for the first time after hitting .282 with 25 homers and 72 RBIs. He led major league outfielders with 16 assists.
