This time last year, Billy Wagner was facing little leaguers in Virginia and recovering from elbow surgery. The former All-Star closer, signed by the Braves in the offseason, retired all three batters he faced Tuesday night in Atlanta’s 7-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies and said he felt comfortable for the first time this spring.

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes has an overactive thyroid and is expected to remain in New York while the results of additional blood tests are used to determine his treatment. Doctors cleared Reyes to play Friday after he took a blood test to follow one conducted during his physical. But team doctors in New York wanted to take a closer look at the speedster and pulled him out of pregame stretching.

Hideki Matsui finally got the chance to play for the Los Angeles Angels. Matsui made his spring debut on Tuesday, getting a single in two trips to the plate during a 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres. The designated hitter struck out against Chris Young in the first and grounded Radhames Liz’s 3-1 pitch up the middle for a hit in the fourth.

Yanks senior VP Newman charged with DUI (AP)

A top New York Yankees executive was charged with driving under the influence in Tampa. Hillsborough County Jail reports show that Mark Newman, the Yankees’ senior vice president of baseball operations, was arrested Monday night. He reportedly refused to take a blood-alcohol test. He was released several hours later on $500 bail.

Former Dodgers CF Willie Davis dies (AP)

Willie Davis, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ speedy center fielder for 13 seasons, has died. He was 69. Burbank police Sgt. Robert Quesada says Davis was found dead Tuesday morning in his Burbank home. Davis appeared in three World Series, including 1966 when he committed a Fall Classic-record three errors in one inning.
