Tigers option INF Sizemore to Triple-A (AP)

The Detroit Tigers have made room on the roster for newly acquired third baseman Jhonny Peralta by optioning infielder Scott Sizemore to Triple-A Toledo. The moves were announced before Detroit’s game against Tampa Bay on Thursday. The Tigers obtained Peralta and cash considerations from Cleveland for minor league left-hander Giovanni Soto on Wednesday.

Roy Halladay showed again why he is one of baseball’s best pitchers. Domonic Brown proved he deserves to be labeled one of the game’s top prospects. Halladay threw a six-hitter and Brown had two hits and two RBIs in his major league debut to lead the streaking Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-1 victory over the slumping Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

Padres retire final 19 Dodgers in win (AP)

Jerry Hairston Jr. drove in three runs and five San Diego pitchers retired the final 19 batters, leading the NL West-leading Padres to a 6-1 win over the rival Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. The Padres beat the Dodgers for the first time in five games at Petco Park this season and for the second time in seven games overall.

Pujols’ RBI in 13th gets Cards past Mets (AP)

Albert Pujols had the 20-inning marathon that the St. Louis Cardinals played against the Mets earlier this year in the back of his mind when he stepped to the plate in a tie game Wednesday night. It was already the 13th inning, and with a day game on the horizon, the big slugger wanted nothing more than to drive in a run and head for bed.

Giants blow big lead, beat Marlins in 10 (AP)

Andres Torres hit a ground-rule single with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the San Francisco Giants to a 10-9 victory over the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night. The Giants hit three straight one-out singles off Florida reliever Clay Hensley before Torres hit a long fly ball over the Marlins’ drawn-in outfield.
